Cinco De Mayo-An
Awesome Success
Thursday, May 5th, 2005 was the
first P.E.R.F.O.R.M. event in which theYO! Watts Dance Academy presented “Cince De Mayo”
at the YO! Watts site. This amazing, fun-filled day of energetic and inspirational performances included the YO! Watts Voices
(directed by Ms. Nysa Shenay), FUNK101, a performance by Carmen Chavez (YO! Dance Director), the Subject2Change
Band, and many special guests. Youth leader Laura Anderson, and the entire YO! Dance Crew really rose to the occasion and
are to be commended for their effort.
We'd like to include extra special shout-outs to Carmen Chavez for her professionalism
and heartfelt solo dance piece. Thanks to Lindsey Hunter, Anthony Ramirez, and Martin Figueroa for throwin' down on "Maria
Maria". Adrian Veliz for being there, Danny Laughlin for steppin'up and lettin'it rip, and the YO! Watts staff for supporting
the event.
Also on Saturday, May 7th S2C had the privilege of participating in another
Cinco De Mayo event sponsored by the Watts Century Latino Organization and the Watts Neighborhood Council. Subject2Change
brought a power-packed performance that turned the event into a real party! Performing songs like War’s appropriately
titled “Cince De Mayo”, the Gloria Estefan hit “Conga”, and Carlos Santana’s “Maria Maria”,
kept a groovy intensity throughout the entire set. Also, on hand was the YO! Dance Academy who, once again, made a spectacular
showing. Special thanks goes out to Arturo Ybarra and the staff of the Watts Century Latino Organization.

In other "Cinco De Mayo" news...
The Los Angles Community Development Department (CDD) was very mindful to incorporate the history
behind this tremendous Cinco De Mayo celebration. They wanted to insure that people knew that this was more than an opportunity
to get together and drink, but a true celebration of the victory of the Mexican Army over the bigger, and much stronger, French
Army in 1862.
The CDD was delighted to show that black and brown unity does exists in our inner city communities despite
what recent media has been promoting. Adrian Veliz of YOM had this to say, "We live in possibly one of the largest low income
brown and black communities in the world, we work together, go to school together and laugh together, don't believe the media
hype. We need the media to start covering the positive sides not just the isolated brown and black violence."
Energy
was bouncing of the walls and participants, staff, and family alike, danced and sang together celebrating love and laughter
for all to enjoy. This event was a huge success and set the mold for things to come.
